How Can AI Assist in Education?
As ChatGPT gains in popularity, it has undoubtedly attracted the attention of students looking to utilize its help in their classes. This of course has caused worry in the academic world regarding how students may be using it in their work. The big worry relates to how using ChatGPT in the classroom could cause a lack of critical thinking or promote laziness within students.
Although these are understandable worries, ChatGPT has several use cases for students looking to grasp further understanding in their studies. We’ve included a few here:
- 24/7 help – The AI tool can be accessed anytime, anywhere, allowing students to ask questions and learn more regarding their topic at ease on their own time.
- Better understanding – If the student is struggling to understand certain concepts, they can ask ChatGPT to explain in simpler language or even provide resources where they can understand easier.
- Time management – ChatGPT can provide students tips and strategies for managing their workload and help to develop good study habits.
- Resources – ChatGPT can provide students with resources, such as recommendations for books they can read or links to websites and/or videos they can explore to help them better grasp the concepts they are learning.
By providing personalized guidance and support to students, ChatGPT can prove to be a game-changer for any students struggling to understand what is being taught in the classroom. It can be used to develop study plans or identify tricks for complex problems.
In this New York time article called What Students Think about ChatGPT, Rachel from Atrisco Heritage Academy says:
“I understand that this would not necessarily be ideal for a school environment where students are meant to create their own essays and develop writing skills by doing so. However, it can also be used to give essay outlines, which I could see as being incredibly helpful for students.”
Zac from Miami Country Day School agrees: “If a student needs to look up an answer anyway, is it not far better to have a more convenient option that also very clearly explains the concept?”
In this UC Riverside article called Is ChatGPT a threat to education?, Morris Madurio, a professor of Biology, also vouches for its use inside classrooms: ““It will be impractical to try to ban or prevent the use of ChatGPT. AI tools are here to stay. They will improve and become increasingly important across disciplines.”
Since technology is accelerating at an ever-increasing rate, it may be helpful to better understand how new software work and how they can be used to improve our daily lives. It is most certainly not a substitute for all of our tasks, but it can lessen the learning curve and get us to our destination of making life easier faster.
